There are some walking trails around ponds where I work and there are wild blackberries that grow along the edge of the path. I love to pick the fresh berries and bring them back to work to wash and eat them. Nothing beats a fresh picked berry, in my opinion.

Not everyone can get fresh berries and the growing season here in New England is very short. When you can’t buy fresh berries, frozen berries are just as nutritious. To be honest, I make many of my smoothies with frozen berries because I buy them in bulk and they last forever.

The combination of strawberries and blackberries make a very tasty weight loss smoothie. Loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber, blackberries are great for helping maintain your weight.

There are only 54 calories in a cup of strawberries and they may help to burn stored fat, making them a great choice if you are trying to lose weight.

Strawberry Blackberry Smoothie

Serves 1

  • 1/2 cup blackberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1/4 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen (about 3 large or 4 medium)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla powder or extract (optional, skip this if you are using vanilla protein powder)
  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder (optional, the one I use can be found here)
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 4 to 5 ice cubes to thicken the smoothie if you use fresh berries

Tip

For extra fiber add 1 tbsp chia seeds

Directions

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!
