I don’t know about you, but I love a good salad. I’m not talking about the simple side salads you get with dinner. You know the ones I’m talking about: iceberg lettuce with a little tomato and cucumber.
Not that kind of salad. The salads I love are full of mixed greens, and definitely include spinach. They also have fruit and nuts, and maybe a little crumbly cheese on top. Just add protein like chicken or salmon and mmm MMM. It’s a little piece of heaven for me.
Are you still with me?
The thing is, I hardly ever make one of those salads for myself. Mainly because it takes a lot of time and ingredients, and, well, I’m not usually that coordinated when it comes to making meals. So I really only get them when I go out.
It got me thinking, though. If all of those ingredients taste so good in a salad, I’ll bet they would taste great blended up in a smoothie, too.
Wow. It really does make a tasty smoothie!
This smoothie is inspired by a cranberry, orange, walnut, and chicken salad that I love. Without the chicken. Because that would just be weird.
I hope you enjoy this orange cranberry walnut green smoothie as much as I do!
Oranges are full of vitamin C – a powerful vitamin with strong antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is a natural immune system booster and may help fight the common cold, flu, and other infections. Oranges also contain high amounts of folate and fiber, and are low in calories. The white inner membrane under the skin contains more vitamin C than the flesh and a lot of the pectin fiber. Try to include as much of that in your smoothie to get the most health benefits.
Cranberries have a high amount and variety of phytonutrients – many offering antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer health benefits. Cranberries are a very good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and manganese, as well as a good source of vitamin E, vitamin K, copper and pantothenic acid.
Walnuts are a fantastic source of omega-3 fats (healthful fats). They are higher in calories but are low on the glycemic index scale, helping you to feel fuller longer.
Spinach has many health benefits including anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, bone, and antioxidant benefits. It is packed with vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium and B vitamins. It is also high in calcium, potassium and fiber.
